“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations.” — Matthew 28:19a (LSB)
Before His ascension, Jesus gathered His followers and gave them one final, world-changing command: “Go therefore and make disciples.” That moment was the spark that ignited a movement still burning today—a movement that transforms lives, changes families, and impacts eternity.
It’s easy to forget the weight of that moment. The early disciples were not stepping into friendly territory. They entered a world hostile to their message—one where religion had hardened into ritual and political power ruled with an iron hand. They were mocked, hunted, and, in many cases, martyred. Yet they went. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, they turned fear into faith and obedience into mission. The world was never the same.
And here we are—two thousand years later—facing our own kind of opposition. We live in a culture increasingly resistant to truth and to Christ. But the mission hasn’t changed. The same Spirit who filled those early disciples fills us. The same authority that sent them now sends you. The Great Commission did not expire in the first century—it still stands until Jesus returns.
So, what does it mean to make disciples today?
Jesus could have built His church through programs, platforms, or power—but He chose people. Discipleship is relational. It’s life-on-life, truth-in-love, one believer helping another grow in the likeness of Christ. It’s transformative. It’s reproducible. It’s the way Jesus designed His Church to expand and endure.
Think for a moment about the people God used to shape your faith—the friend who invited you to church, the mentor who prayed with you, the pastor who opened the Scriptures for you. You’re part of that legacy. Someone poured into your life so that you might pour into others.
For me, it was a few faithful men—my Youth Pastor, my Pastor, and some close friends—who invested deeply in my walk with Christ. Their influence still echoes in my ministry today. That’s the power of discipleship. Just as Jesus was to His disciples, and Paul was to Timothy, so you and I are called to invest in the next generation of believers.
This seven-part series, “Disciples Making Disciples,” isn’t about reinventing the wheel. It’s about rediscovering the simple, biblical pattern that Jesus gave us—a way of life that produces healthy, mature followers of Christ who go on to disciple others.
My prayer is that through these lessons, you’ll not only understand what discipleship is but why it matters—and that you’ll catch the vision to live it out. The Great Commission isn’t for a select few; it’s for every believer.
Step boldly into that calling.
Be a disciple who makes disciples.
And watch how God uses your obedience to transform the world around you.
What’s Coming Next: Over the next seven weeks, we’ll explore key aspects of following Jesus as His disciple. We’ll begin with The Commission of the Disciple, then move to The Foundation, The Worship, and The Walk of the disciple. Finally, we’ll study The Warfare, The Witness, and The Servanthood of the disciple—practical, biblical insights that will equip you to grow in your faith and to make disciples who make disciples.
